Founded by renowned local art expert Marjorie Chu in 1971, Art Forum celebrates the new language of contemporary art in Asia and is dedicated to being a bridge between artists, art lovers, collectors and first time buyers of high quality affordable art.

One of the most established art galleries in Singapore, Art Forum is located in a restored two storey terrace house on Cairnhill Road and features high quality affordable artwork by more than 150 artists mainly from Southeast Asia: Singapore, Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam as well as China, Taiwan, Japan, India and Australia.

The depth and diversity of the gallery’s art offerings include paintings (oil on canvas, acrylic on canvas, charcoal on paper, ink on paper, watercolour); prints (lithographs, woodcut, mezzotint, etching, monotype, silkscreen etc); photography (silver gelatin, C-print, digital print); sculpture (wood, bronze, copper, granite); and ceramics. The majority of the artworks are under S$10,000 with prices starting from S$500.

Over the past 40 years the gallery has built up an impressive track record of identifying and promoting the early works of notable artists whose work can now be found in major collections such as the Singapore Art Museum and The National Art Gallery of Singapore. Some of those artists include Chua Ek Kay, Goh Beng Kwan, Latiff Mohidin, Jimmy Ong, Ithipol Thangchalok, Preecha Thaothong, Djoko Pekik, Srihadi Soedarsono, Ang Kiu Kok and Romulo Olazo.

Today, Art Forum continues to support and showcase the work of young artists who have the potential to become the masters of the future. These include Natee Utarit, Kamin Lerthchaiprasert, Kedsuda Loogthong, Natthawut Singthong, Jeremy Sharma, Kheng-Li Wee, Edo Pop, Ugo Untoro, Tian Mangzi, Bernardo Pacquing, Lindslee, Maya Munoz.

Jeremy Sharma was born in Singapre in 1977 and he obtained his Bachelor of Art (Fine Art) degree from LaSalle in 2003. I attended his graduation exhibition and was instantly attracted to his work. Subsequently I visited his studio and discovered these three works on paper.  Jeremy explained the inspiration behind his works. Drawing with Gopis, Sunspot, and Class Photo Lacuna all have ideas of erasure and collage of an image. With Gopis, there is a narrative of the traditional Hindu nudes looking for their clothes but with their eyes covered and lost in an abstract landscape. In Sunspot, the narrative is lost further where the image disintegrates into a kind of reverse-collage (peeling off) to reveal an explosion-like form. A completely erased space is left in Class Photo, only revealing a trace of what was there. This technique is called Decollage. I continued to monitor and support his progress by presenting the ‘Sea Slab’ series in my gallery.

Variations – Cerulean Suite 3 (Reflection)

The ‘Sea Slab’ series led to Jeremy’s solo show in my gallery entitled ‘Variations’ in 2011. It began with the sea followed by the colour cerulean. It was a daily record of painting and trying to get that exact tone of greenish-blue that Jeremy was interested in. He was already interested in these tones of cerulean when he was painting the “sea-slabs”. In the ‘Variation’ series he had collapsed the planes and flattened them to fill out the surface.

Jeremy's solo show entitled “Apropos” will be shown in the ICA Gallery 2, Lasalle College of the Arts, Singapore from 12 April – 11 May 2012.
