Marjorie Chu has been an art dealer and a pioneer gallery owner since 1971. It can be said that she discovered the second generation of Singapore and Southeast Asian artists. 

 

More than 50 years on, Marjorie continues to discover and promote emerging artists.

​

She is often asked, ‘how do you select works/artists to exhibit?' Her simple answer is by ‘eye’.

 

Truth is that she never chooses works by artists because they are expensive, ‘famous’ or dead; never by ear.

 

Her 'eye to spot the best' has been honed through hard earned experience, encounters with diverse range of artists and unique techniques, and the ever-changing shifts of the art market

Always dedicated, she opens her mind to art by traveling widely i.e Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines. Understanding their history, backed by their culture, provides answers to what makes art of their country distinctive and individual.

Her interest expands to India (West Bengal) and even Australia; meeting, befriending and exhibiting their art.

She actively organises artists talks, workshops and demonstrations to share knowledge and advance the appreciation of art by local and regional artists. 

 

She is the author of Understanding Contemporary Southeast Asian Art published in Singapore, 2003.
