18th Century English artist-migrants to Australia

Since the beginning of the penal colony in 1788 and following the gold rush in 1850s, migrants from England flocked Victoria, Australia. Australian society continues to be influenced by its strong English heritage.

Alun Leach-Jones (1937-2017), Lancashire, UK. Alun studied art from 1955 until 1957 at Liverpool College of Art. During that time he encountered abstract expressionist works which influenced his way of thinking about form and colour.

Alun immigrated to Adelaide in 1960, and enrolled at the South Australian School of Art, studying printmaking.

A consummate printmaker, Leach-Jones' colourful and vibrant works are examples of his complex yet clean shapes.
