Tran Van Thao is one of Vietnam’s contemporary foremost abstract artist.
He was born in 1961 in Saigon, graduated from the Ho Chi Minh City Fine Art University. He lives and works in Ho Chi Minh City.
He has held numerous exhibitions in Asia, Europe and the U.S.A. and his works are in public and private collections in Vietnam and abroad. In 2002 he was the recipient of the Asian Cultural Council’s Starr Foundation Fellowship and spend four months as an artist-in-residence in New York.
Tran finds beauty in the unruliness of life and expresses his awe of such unpredictability through abstract art.
… And when we open our eyes, we see many things: sun, objects and people. When we close our eyes, we are disorientated by the shadows of what we have seen, says the artist.
