HASEGAWA
YUICHI
Born in Aizu Wakamatsu, Fukushima Prefecture in 1945. Exhibitions include 1988 solo show, Alphaflor Galerie, Freiburg, Germany; 1987 solo show, Elegance Gallery, Fukushima; 1987, 41st Fukushima Art Festival. Collections in Cincinnati Art Museum; Art Gallery of New South Wales, Hamburg Museum of Arts and Crafts; Singapore National Museum.
Hasegawa began making woodcuts in 1970, encouraged by his mentor Kiyoshi Saito. His woodblock technique is unique. Whereas most artists carve one block for each color, this artist uses only one block in total - carving, printing and effacing until the colored print is complete. Each stage is an entity in itself, and can never be repeated. His print editions are very small - 20 or less. Hasegawa's family were lacquer craftsmen, and the lustrous, shiny inks he uses are reminiscent of that art. The abstract works examine the mystery and secrecy of the universe. The artist comments: "I am striving to create works with a meaningful inner spirit. The immense time and space of the Universe, along with the various forms of creation observed in nature, are my theme."
